GitHub Repositories

Why use Git and GitHub?

Git is a verson control system that was developed by Linus Torvalds in 2005. So in simple terms, Git can be used to create versions of your software. Git is useful if you make an error in the current version of your project, that you can't seem to fix. Git allows you to easily revert back to an older working version. GitHub is an online git repository hosting service, which can be used to share your projects with your team or the world. GitHub also allows you to create webpages (GitHub pages) from your projects, which are hosted for free when using a public repository.

For people who are looking at building websites and web applications with code (HTML, CSS and JavaScript), then Git and GitHub is the answer. People are sometimes scared off when they hear the words, "coding" or "programming", but it is much easier than you may think. There are many simple free teaching resources like W3schools and Free Code Camp to help you get started. GitHub also gives you access to thousands of free open source projects and code, which you can copy or clone for free. Often people run away to use simplier drop and drag WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) website editors, but can run into limitations with the software. People who develop programming skills, possess the ability to freely create and build whatever software or web applications that they can imagine. What if you could create a web application that was associated with one your favourite interests and share it with the world using GitHub? Maybe it is time to give it a try today!

About Me and My Projects

Hi, my name is Neil Woodroffe. I am an Occupational Therapist, Sport and Exercise Scientist, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner, retro computer enthusiast and a web/computer programmer. I’ve had an interest in computer programming/coding since childhood. I remember my first taste of programming in the early 80s was BASIC on my Intellivision and soon after on my Commodore 64. My interest was reignited in about 2009, when I started playing video games with my son and became curious about game engines. I began to read and try out several C based languages and to my surprise I was soon able to understand the syntax. A few years years ago I started to create web applications and stubbled across Git and GitHub.

I built this website to showcase my GitHub projects, which are categorized into my three interest areas:

  1. Occupational Therapy
  2. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
  3. Retro Computers

Please enjoy my GitHub projects thus far and there will be many more to come!
